This Local Foods business needs a name. And we want your help to come up with it!
Over the next few weeks we want to hear what you think we should name this business. Out of those suggestions we’ll pick the three we like the most, which will go up for a vote. Where you the community will decide the final name.
Here are some of our objectives which you may consider in coming up with our name:
- The business will focus on local foods to promote healthy eating and sustainability;
- The business will offer seasonal menus, convenience, and a warm space.
- The business aims to be a valuable and contributing member of the Union Street and Chinatown/Strathcona communities.
What the winners will receive:
1st Place – $300 in credit towards your choice of (1) our Local Foods business at 243 Union or (2) a local urban farm CSA; and clout knowing that you named This Space.
2nd Place – $100 in credit towards your choice of (1) our Local Foods business at 243 Union or (2) a local urban farm CSA;
3rd Place – $50 in credit towards your choice of (1) our Local Foods business at 243 Union or (2) a local urban farm CSA.
Email your business name suggestions along with your contact details to hello@thisspace.ca or leave a comment on this post.

This Space
or alternatively
Our Space
You’ve already created a strong brand known by the neighbourhood. Why change it? This was a great concept from the start, and I think you should build on it. Plus, it will help people remember how this business started and you can use it in your marketing strategy if you want to maintain a strong community aspect to it. Our Space brings some warmth to it, and it shows how the community was empowered in shaping this business.
Also, I think the name goes well with local food concept. You will be selling foods from BC, our own space. This Space/ Our Space can be used at a larger sense, not just 243 Union.
Can’t wait for it to open!

+1 for “This Space” There are too many local food purveyors out there with trendy or cutesy names. Stick with what has been working for you.
But if you really want to change it, here are some suggestions

Pastiches (an anagram of This Space)
By Vero, November 18, 2011 at 1:48 am
The anagram is a good idea. Here is another one:
Pistaches (French word for pistachios)

farm to table
By malloreigh, November 15, 2011 at 12:26 pm
there’s a farm:table in san francisco – i think it’s important for vancouver businesses to be unique.
i love the idea of calling it “this space” or “our space” – i prefer “this space”.
By Veronique, November 15, 2011 at 4:38 pm
I lean towards This Space too.
“Honey, can you grab some milk from This Space on your way home?” sounds better than Our Space.
By This Space, November 15, 2011 at 11:00 pm
Keep it at This Space? Why mess with something that you’ve kindly said works?
Hmmm…we had planned for the public to name this place so “This Space” was a generic blank canvas name. We’ll think about this one a bit. In the meantime, more Name ideas from all please!

NOM.
By Jen, November 16, 2011 at 8:19 am
Here
Definition: in this place; in this spot or locality ( opposed to there)
It’s an evolution of This Space/place but more immediate, with an emphasis on being local (here) and seasonal (here now). And it can cause some nice confusion…”Let’s go to Here.”…”Where?”…”Here.”…”Where?!”….”HERE you moron!”.
By sk8, November 16, 2011 at 8:42 am
I think you should keep the word(s) “this space” or at least “space” in it as it will add for some continuity, which in turn, may also add to some loyalty if they played a part in the original voting process.

Spaces
And inside, you could have a Dine-In Space, Mingling Space, Take-Out Space, Veggie Space, etc.
You could also use the concept to let the customer know which Space (city, region or farm) their food is coming from.

Unicornicopia: A Corner Store. A testament to our childhood trips down the road to pick up penny candy, only now for an elevated and adult kind of treat – the rare HEALTHY and delicious sandwich, fresh veggie bowl, or sweet fruit salad with dried cranberries. Oh I can see it – a magical food closet.
Its horn was said to have the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness.
